1700’s: A monster attack at sea leads to an unstable alliance between pirates and a noble’s traveling ship. The survivors must work together or perish

A mythos version of the original fairy tale The Little Mermaid.  This story is set before the tale was written.  A pirate crew tried to capture a traveling nobleman’s vessel.  At the same time the capture was taking place, a sea creature attacked the two ships destroying the pirate vessel and badly damaging the nobleman’s vessel.  All surviving members are needed if any of them want to return to land safely.    The question is, if they return to land will their sanity be intact.
